About Punjab

Punjab, located in the north west of India, is one of the most prosperous states of India. The five rivers Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum gave it its name 'punj-ab' or the 'land of five waters'. These five rivers divide the state into three regions: Majha, Doaba and Malwa .Punjab is primarily an agricultural state and enjoys the natural benefits of fertile soils and abundant waters.

Punjab, the richest state in India that throbs with the vibrant culture of equally vibrant people, has always moved on the path of prosperity despite all odds. With its inimitable style of transforming every potential opportunity into a success story through enterprise and endeavor, Punjab has always been at the forefront in the development story of India. Punjab – "The Food basket and Granary of India", has been awarded National Productivity Award for agriculture extension services for consecutively ten years from 1991-92 to 1998-99 and 2001 to 2013-14.

Punjab is now well on its way to rapid industrialization through coordinated development of Small, Medium and Large scale industries. Punjab is considered to have the best infrastructure in India; this includes road, rail and air connectivity that are extensive throughout the region. Ludhiana (Punjab) has been adjudged as the best place for doing business in India as per the World Bank Study, 2009.

With the up-gradation of Amritsar International Airport & International Airport SAS Nagar, Punjab is geared to be one of the finest and easily accessible tourist as well as business destinations in South Asia. Punjab has achieved a status of power surplus state by setting up three new power projects at Talwandi Sabo, Rajpura and Goindwal Sahib.

Punjab also has the lowest poverty rate in India and has won the best state performance award, based on statistical data compiled by the Indian Government. Even though, Punjabis account for less than 2.5% of the Indian population, they are one of the most prosperous races in India. Their per capita income is twice the national average

Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab. Others major industries include the manufacturing of scientific instruments, electrical goods, financial services, machine tools, textiles, sewing machines, sports goods, starch, tourism, fertilizers, bicycles, garments, and the processing of pine oil and sugar.
