PUNJAB SKILL DEVELOPMENT MISSION TO SET UP 4 LABORATORIES FOR OVERSEAS PLACEMENT WITH ASSISTANCE OF BRITISH COUNCIL: CHANNI

·         PSDM to train 50 thousand Youth of the state under various Skill Development Schemes during this year

·         PSDM to train 1000 Jail Inmates in six prisons

Chandigarh, January 23:

            “The Punjab Government would provide training to 50000 youth of the state under various Skill Development Schemes in 2019-20.” The Employment Generation & Technical Education Minister Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi while disclosing this here today said that this training would be provided by the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM).

The Minister also said that in line with the aspirations of the youth of Punjab for overseas placement, the Punjab Skill Development Mission with the technical assistance with the British council is proposing to set up 4 laboratories in Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Jalandhar.

He further said that the laboratories would provide facilities for improving the communication skills, especially that of spoken english of the youth from Punjab. Each laboratory would annually impart such training to 100 youths. The labs would be set up with a specific objective to equip the trained candidates with employability skills to enhance their prospects of overseas placement. 

The Principal Secretary of Employment Generation Department cum Mission Director PSDM Mr. D.K. Tiwari said that in its pursuit and mission for making skilled Punjab, the Punjab Skill Development Mission has till now trained 22000 youth while this year it aims to double the number.

He said that the youth are currently undergoing training under the mission in the trades of Beauty and Wellness, Apparel, IT/ITES, Healthcare, Telecom, Retail, Electronics, Logistics, Capital Goods and Banking and Financial Services.  Nearly 60 percent of the total trained candidates are Women. In order to promote captive placements, the mission has identified 9 manufacturing and service oriented agencies which have the capacity and bandwidth to train and place candidates within their own establishments.

Elaborating more, Mr. Channi said that in a one of its kind initiative, the mission through the Ministry of Skill Development and Enterprise has got the sanction to train 1000 jail inmates in six identified prisons in Punjab. This project would go a long way in setting an example for rehabilitation of the jail inmates.
